Product: Raw poultry
Available sizes: 3.2kg, 4.1kg and 4.6kg
Cooking Your Capon
Remove all outer packaging before cooking and allow the bird to come towards room temperature while the oven preheats.
Preheat your oven to 180°C / 160°C Fan / Gas Mark 4.
Place the capon in a roasting tin and loosely cover with foil.
As a guide, allow approximately:
3.2kg – 2 hours 45 minutes
4.1kg – 3 hours 25 minutes
4.6kg – 3 hours 50 minutes
Remove the foil for approximately the final 30 minutes of cooking to allow the skin to brown.
Cooking times are a guide only and ovens can vary. Always check your capon is thoroughly cooked before serving.
Insert a clean food thermometer into the thickest part of the bird, between the breast and thigh, and ensure it has reached a minimum core temperature of 75°C.
The meat should be steaming hot throughout, with no pink meat remaining and the juices running clear.
Once cooked, allow the capon to rest loosely covered before carving.
Storage & Freezing
Keep refrigerated between 0°C and 5°C and consume by the use-by date shown on the product label.
Suitable for home freezing. Freeze on or before the use-by date.
Defrost thoroughly in the refrigerator before cooking. Allow plenty of time for the bird to defrost completely. As a general guide, allow approximately 10–12 hours per kg when defrosting poultry in a refrigerator at around 4°C.
Once defrosted, keep refrigerated and cook within 24 hours. Do not refreeze once defrosted.
That is much better than the cautious wording I had previously.
Food Safety
This product contains raw poultry.
Do not wash raw poultry before cooking.
Wash hands thoroughly after handling and clean all utensils, chopping boards and surfaces that have come into contact with raw poultry.
Keep raw poultry separate from cooked and ready-to-eat foods.
