Description

A Classic Roast, Whatever the Occasion

There’s something hard to beat about a beautifully roasted whole chicken – golden, crisp skin on the outside with tender, succulent meat underneath.

Our whole chickens are carefully selected and supplied oven-ready, ready for you to season and roast at home. They’re a great choice for a traditional Sunday dinner, relaxed family meal or for anyone looking for a smaller alternative to turkey at Christmas.

Available in two sizes, they’re also a brilliant option if you like having a little left over for sandwiches, pies, soups or another meal the following day.

Choose Your Chicken

Minimum Weight Approx. Serves
1.2kg 2–3 people
1.8kg 4–5 people

All weights shown are minimum weights.

Serving sizes are a guide and will depend on appetite. If you’d like plenty left for sandwiches, soups or another meal, we’d recommend choosing the larger bird.

A Smaller Christmas Centrepiece

Not everyone needs a large turkey at Christmas.

For a smaller gathering, a whole roast chicken makes a lovely centrepiece without leaving you with more meat than you need. Roast it traditionally with all the trimmings and you’ve still got everything you want from Christmas dinner – crisp skin, succulent roast meat and plenty of roasting juices for a proper gravy.

The 1.8kg chicken is particularly suited to a smaller Christmas table, serving approximately 4–5 people.

Why Choose a Whole Chicken?

  • Tender, versatile roast meat
  • Supplied oven-ready
  • Perfect for Sunday lunch or Christmas dinner
  • Two sizes to suit different households
  • Great for making the most of leftovers
  • Carcass and roasting juices can be used for homemade stock and gravy

Ingredients

Chicken (100%).

Allergens

No declarable allergens.

Please always check the product label supplied with your order for the most up-to-date product and allergen information.

Storage & Defrosting

Keep refrigerated between 0°C and 5°C and consume by the use-by date shown on the product label.

Suitable for home freezing. Freeze on or before the use-by date.

If frozen, defrost thoroughly in the refrigerator before cooking. Once completely defrosted, cook within 24 hours and do not refreeze.

Cooking Your Chicken

Remove all outer packaging before cooking.

Preheat your oven to 190°C / Fan 170°C / Gas 5.

Place the chicken in a roasting tin, season as desired and roast until thoroughly cooked. For extra flavour, try adding garlic, fresh herbs and a little butter or oil before roasting.

As a general guide, allow approximately 20 minutes per 500g plus 20 minutes.

Cooking times are a guide only and ovens vary. Always ensure your chicken is thoroughly cooked before serving.

Insert a clean food thermometer into the thickest part of the meat, avoiding the bone, and ensure it has reached a minimum core temperature of 75°C. The meat should be steaming hot throughout, with no pink meat remaining and the juices running clear.

Once cooked, remove from the oven and allow the chicken to rest before carving. Resting gives the meat time to relax and helps keep those lovely roasting juices in the chicken rather than on the carving board.

Cooper’s Tip

Sit your chicken on a bed of roughly chopped onion and carrot with a few sprigs of fresh herbs before roasting. As the chicken cooks, the vegetables catch all those roasting juices and give you a brilliant base for homemade gravy.

And don’t throw away the carcass. Add it to a pot with vegetables and water and you’ve got the beginnings of a homemade chicken stock – perfect for soup, gravy or another meal later in the week.

Making the Most of Leftovers

One of the best things about roasting a whole chicken is what you can do with anything that’s left.

Cold roast chicken is brilliant in sandwiches and wraps, or use it for a quick curry, chicken pie, pasta dish or homemade soup. Just make sure leftovers are cooled and refrigerated promptly and used safely.

Food Safety

This product contains raw poultry.

Do not wash raw chicken. Wash hands thoroughly after handling and clean all utensils and surfaces that have come into contact with raw poultry. Keep raw poultry separate from cooked and ready-to-eat foods.
